Sword-Wielding Man Threathened to Kill His Family

The following is a selection of calls from Mission Viejo to the Orange County Sheriff's Department from March 8 to March 11.

A man who police say threathened to kill his family with a samurai sword was arrested around 6:48 p.m. last Friday at the 24800 block of Acropolis.

His family said Babak Azar, who was also violating a restraining order by living in the home, has also been acting strangely over the last month.

Police also found several nunchucks along with the sword inside the home.

Azar was charged with making criminal threats and possesion of a deadly weapon and is in custody at Theo Lacy Facility on a $40,000 bail.

Orange County court records show Azar pled guilty to elder abuse in 2009, when he spent 24 days in jail and three years probation. Another case shows charges againsts him for battery on a police officer and resisting arrest along with public intoxication from October.

Traffic stop. 10:26 p.m. Thursday. Via Fabricante and Alicia Parkway. A 29-year-old man, who works as a janitor, was arrested during a traffic stop and is in custody at Central Men’s Jail on a $1,500 bail.

Traffic stop. 8:22 p.m. Thursday. Marguerite Parkway and Via Angelina. A 47-year-old woman was arrested during a traffic stop and is currently being processed.

Trespassing. 3:29 p.m. Thursday. La Paz Road and Chrisanta Drive.

Vandalism in progress. 10:47 a.m. Thursday. Trabuco Road and Via Bahia.

Traffic stop. 7:00 a.m. Thursday. Oso Parkway and San Rafael Drive. A 23-year-old man who works in construction was arrested during a traffic stop and was taken to Orange County Jail and was released upon posting an undisclosed bail.

Traffic stop. 1:28 a.m. Thursday. La Paz Road and Muirlands Boulevard. A 29-year-old man, who works as a cashier, was arrested during a traffic stop and was taken to Orange County Jail and was released upon posting an undisclosed bail.

Suspicious person/circumstances. 5:08 p.m. Wednesday. 26900 block of Pacific Terrace Drive.

Assault. 10:10 a.m. Wednesday. 27700 block of Santa Margarita Parkway.

Disturbance. 8:41 a.m. Wednesday. 27700 block of Santa Margarita Parkway.

Traffic stop. 11:48 p.m. Tuesday. Marguerite Parkway and Via Escolar. A 36-year-old woman was arrested during  traffic stop and was taken to Orange County Jail where she was cited and released.

Shots heard-no suspect information. 10:21 p.m. Tuesday. 26100 block of Camino Adelanto. A resident reported hearing a shotgun go off two houses down.  Another caller, five blocks away, reported hearing two gunshots a minute before.

Suspicious person/circumstances. 8:57 p.m. Tuesday. Crown Valley Parkway and Bellogente. A caller said a man wearing a hospital gown, a wristband, with no shoes was walking northbound on Crown Valley Parkway.

Disturbance-family dispute. 7:53 p.m. Tuesday. 28000 block of Marguerite Parkway. Police responding to a disturbance call arrested a 25-year-old woman who was taken to Orange County Jail  and was released when the district attorney refused to prosecute.

Welfare check. 3:07 p.m. Tuesday. 28000 block of Blandings. A caller asked sheriff deputies to check for a boy whose father grabbed, hit and pushed into a wall at Saddleback Lanes the night before.

Disturbance. 1:04 p.m. Tuesday. Los Alisos Boulevard and Jeronimo Road. A caller told police that 15 to 20 men were fighting near Sonics.

Vandalism in progress. 12:12 p.m. Tuesday. Marguerite Parkway and Avery Parkway. A caller said a group of ten men were tagging the walls of a business next to the new martial arts school.
