And the big winner was Mia Ross, a student at Ladera Ranch Middle School. Mia won an ice cream party for 10 from Farrell's. Here are some of the other winners: Animator Bob Singer selected the winners over the weekend.

Brown's Revised Budget Holds Bigger Ax Over Schools

If voters shoot down a November initiative to temporarily raise taxes, school districts statewide would face $5.5 billion in cuts, about $700 million worse than what the governor estimated in January.

Gov. Jerry Brown continues to lay his hopes for state fiscal soundness on a November tax initiative, but if it doesn’t pass, schools will face additional cuts that could chop three weeks off the next school year. On Monday, Brown revised the 2012-13 budget he first released in January. Called the May revise, his new figures reflect tax revenues that have fallen far short of earlier predictions. “It’s a difficult budget,” Brown acknowledged in a press conference. If voters approve his temporary tax hike measure, Brown’s revised budget would actually increase funding for schools by $15 billion in four years, or $2,500 per student. Brown called the tax initiative reasonable. “I think it’s fair, and I think it provides a reliable source of …

Officers Must Stand Trial in Death of O.C. Homeless Man Kelly Thomas

Judge finds sufficient evidence to hold over Fullerton cops Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli for trial. The beating of Kelly Thomas was shown for the first time during this week's hearing.

Two Fullerton police officers were ordered today to stand trial for the beating death of schizophrenic transient Kelly Thomas. Officer Manuel Anthony Ramos, 38, is charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, while Cpl Jay Cicinelli, 40, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and excessive force in the beating last July 5 at the Fullerton Transportation Center. The 37-year-old homeless man died five days later when his family took him off life support. The 38-year-old Ramos, a 10-year Fullerton police veteran, is free on $1 million bail, one of the highest ever posted in Orange County. Cicinelli, 42, is free on $25,000 bail. They are both on unpaid administrative leave. Ramos faces a potential sentence of 15 years to …

As a Advocate I feel all the Police Officers involved in the situation are just as equally responsible for his death. for one the officers present could have prevented such brute force the fact is man was unarmed no such force should have been used. there are non lethal methods so their claim is hog wash this truly makes it harder for those who truly serve and protect in all communities   more ›

320 New Apartments for Northeast Mission Viejo

The city agreed to a compromise on affordable housing that will bring more apartments to Los Alisos Boulevard.

A deal six years in the making, Mission Viejo made way for 320 new apartments on Los Alisos Boulevard where a former K-Mart has sat vacant for years. The deal reached between apartment developer UDR and the city involved a compromise on affordable housing. Under the new deal 24 affordable housing units will be provided—half the original number. And now instead of keeping them affordable for 55 years, UDR has promised the city to keep them affordable for only 10 years. The state legislature dissolved all city redevelopment agencies, and with them the incentives cities use to encourage developers to provide low-income housing. Without the $4.1 million it was expecting from the city to offset the cost of affordable housing, UDR requested last…

MIssion Viejo Dog Park Land Swap Vote Tonight

Whether or not Mission Viejo will have a long-discussed dog park could come down to Monday night's city council vote.

A vote Monday night could settle plans for a dog park in Mission Viejo. In March, dog park supporters were surprised by a tied vote on a land swap between the city and the county. That swap would give 2.7 acres to Mission Viejo in exchange for 7.2 acres for the county, and would enable the city to move forward on a dog park planned just south of Gilleran Park. Opponents say the park as planned will be too expensive. Supporters say the city of 95,000 needs a place for dogs to socialize and exercise.

Yes, MV NEEDS a place for dogs and their humans to socialize and exercise --safely, off leash! I am sorry to not be able to attend the council meeting tonight. I am in FULL support of the MV dog park! I think it would be a marvelous addition to our community; it would easily become another wonderful reason to continue living and loving life in MV!!   more ›

Affordable Housing Back on the Table

After an apartment complex was rejected for lacking affordable housing, the developer has come back to the city with a compromise.

Will a new apartment complex built on the old K-Mart site include housing for low-income residents? The question is at the heart of a complex deal between the city and UDR, a developer set to build 320 apartments at 28601 Los Alisos Blvd. Set to build them, that is, before the state revoked all city redevelopment agencies, and with them the incentives cities use to encourage developers to provide low-income housing. With no city incentives, UDR requested last month that its low-income housing requirement be removed from the city's agreement. In a 3-2 vote, the city council said no, effectively killing the city's agreement with UDR. Mayor Frank Ury and Councilman Dave Leckness voted against the majority, arguing that if the city did not …

Pull Plug on San Onofre in 10 Years, GOP Leader Says

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher says the technology is outdated and shouldn't be relicensed. "We can be safer and more efficient," he says after touring the reactor.

San Onofre is a technological dinosaur and should be replaced with a more modern nuclear reactor when its license expires in 10 years, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach) said Thursday. "There should be no new licenses issued to light-water reactors," he said. "We should utilize those reactors that are in place because we've spent tens of billions of dollars, but we shouldn't work to extend their lives ... not because of how unsafe they are now, but because we can be safer and more efficient. We have to realize that this is 50-year-old technology." Rohrabacher spoke to the media outside the embattled plant Thursday afternoon after touring its security features. The congressman said he was impressed with the measures San Onofre had …

Court Denies Orly Taitz Election Fraud Claim

The Mission Viejo dentist's Republican rival for secretary of state did not commit fraud because he once registered as a Democrat, according to the court.

Mission Viejo dentist Orly Taitz has lost another high-profile court battle. An appeals court issued its decision Tuesday that Taitz was not the victim of voter fraud or election fraud in her 2010 battle against fellow Republican opponent Damon Dunn. Taitz and Dunn were competing for the Republican nomination for secretary of state. Taitz lost to Dunn on June 8 during the Republican primary and then sued Dunn June 17, claiming fraud. Dunn later lost to incumbent democrat Debra Bowen. Taitz made headlines last year for arguing in court that President Barack Obama is not a U.S. citizen. She lost that case, too. In the most recent case, Taitz claimed Dunn ran against her unfairly because he had voted as a democrat in Florida in the past. She …

Emken? Never heard of her. But Thanks for the post regarding the "republican" primary. You must be quite the political junkie. If it were not for your post, no one in California would know about this. I'll look that up to see if that is in 2012. Diane Feinstein is the Republicanish senator here, we really don't need an Emken. Besides, California isn't interested in Repub primaries. What we are …   more ›

Doomed Sailors Didn't Have to Wear Life Vests

Three men on board the Aegean lost their lives during the deadly Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race. A fourth sailor remains lost at sea.

It is likely the four sailors aboard the Aegean – a yacht that was racing over the weekend in the Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race — were not wearing life jackets when their yacht took a deadly turn off the shore of northern Mexico. Some media outlets have reported that the Aegean crewmen were not wearing flotation devices when authorities say the yacht may have collided with an unidentified vessel, but an official with the U.S. Coast Guard told Patch that report could not be verified. “It is required practice to have life vests for everyone on board, but they are not required to wear them at all times,” Henry Dunphy, a Coast Guard spokesman, said Monday. "As far as if they were wearing life jackets when it happened, that cannot be confirmed…
