Mission Viejo Community Center Closed This Weekend

A soccer tournament closes the community center this weekend. Plus read about the police chief who's leaving Mission Viejo.

Here are five things to keep you informed about Mission Viejo and Orange County for Thursday, Aug. 15.

  1. Community Center Closure: The Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center will be closed Saturday and Sunday to accomodate crowds at the West Coast Futbol soccer tournament. The facility will resume normal operations Monday at 8 a.m.
  2. Police Chief Promoted: Sheriff's Lt. Chris Wilson will leave his job as chief of police services for Mission Viejo after being promoted to captain. Wilson spent a little over a year as Mission Viejo's chief.

    The city will be interviewing for a new chief at the end of the month.

  4. Mission Viejo is officially 40 acres larger following a county meeting Wednesday morning. Standard Pacific Homes of Irvine plans to use about 28 of those acres when the company builds 84 homes on El Toro Road north of the previous city boundary.
  5. It’s Beatles Day at the Sawdust Art and Craft Festival on Laguna Canyon Road. Beginning at 10 a.m., guests can enjoy 1960s-themed art activities and classes, as well as Beatles cover bands.
