Bad "sulfuric" smell at night

Has anyone else noticed an extremely sulfuric and "sewage" type smell at night in Mission Viejo? It wakes me up and my daughter and I routinely wake up with a sore throat. Anyone else notice?

What part of town do you live in, Juli?

My home backs up to Jeronimo. Cross streets are Jeronimo and Alicia. I've noticed the smell off and on for one - two weeks.

I've smelled this before but not the past few days. I'm also in this area.

I'm in the area and have noticed that smell as well. But not since that heat spell at the end of August.

It smells a bit like natural gas - noticed it this morning. We live between Jeronimo and Trabuco.

Very interesting, folks. I'll try to find an answer for you this week. Thanks for the info. For those who have smelled it, is there a certain time of day? Certain weather conditions (after the rain, etc.?)

Peter I've noticed it most in the early evening after it's been hot.

It's almost a moldy type smell and it is really strong (noticed on an early morning run) near the Montevideo Elementary School.

Very puzzling. I haven't gotten to the bottom of this yet, but will keep an eye (nose?) out for clues. If anyone else spots the smell or has any leads on what might be causing it, please let me know: peter.schelden@patch.com

Has anyone called the Gas Company? They will come out for free.

That sounds very similar to what happened at the reservoir by the toll road a few years back when we had a heat spell. I think it was something growing on the surface of the water. Isn't there a reservoir behind the Lutheran church off Alicia near Trabuco? I'd call the water district in that area to find out.

I've checked with the El Toro Water District. They said they don't know what the smell could be caused by, and don't think the El Toro Reservoir is responsible. I spoke to So Cal Gas, and here's what they said: ""We have sent someone to investigate the source of the odor. We at the gas company… have not received any calls from our customers about this smell." Anytime you think you've smelled natural gas, call 1-800-427-2200 for SoCal Gas. For any sulphurous smells south of La Paz, call SDGE at 1-800-411-7343.
