As a child, I would constantly hear things like, “Wait until you’re older.” or “You aren’t ready yet.” For years I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to be taken seriously and respected. They do say, “Respect your elders.” Right?
So here I sit as a middle-aged woman, fighting an uphill battle in my efforts to find even the simplest of jobs. I’m not applying to be a cover model or knocking on the door at NASA. A simple front desk Receptionist job is all I seek. Just some supplemental income with a little to set aside for retirement. Earlier on Facebook I posted this as my status:

Job hunting at 47 is like rock climbing wearing roller blades.
It’s true. I have applied and sent resumes with cover letters to 967 jobs openings, utilized over a dozen job search sites, created accounts on all of the social media sites, current as well as new and trending (RebelMouse) , and made several important connections on LinkedIn. On top of all of this, I’ve spent time as a volunteer and signed on with a temp agency, where I’ve done some Receptionist work, but nothing permanent.
So, you might be thinking, “Well, she seems to be doing everything correctly. Her interview skills must be the problem.” I arrive early, smiling, dressed professionally with additional copies of my resume, contact cards and paper to take notes. When asked unusual or unexpected interview questions that might make others stammer or become uncomfortable, I sit up a little straighter, and with my eyes sparkling, answer with a well worded confident reply.
The only way that I can see to fix this problem is to stop being 47.
. . .. Off I go to fill out job application number 968.
