Two local teens earn highest honors in Sea scouting.

Mariners 936 of Dana Point recently celebrated the promotion of two of its own to the revered Quartermaster rank, Sea Scouting’s highest honor. The award, which is the Sea Scout equivalent of Eagle Scout, is extremely difficult to attain and requires commitment, dedication, and perseverance. To achieve this highest rank, a scout must be able to lead all of their fellow scouts, teach skills learned in previous merit badges, and show a knowledge of the water on many different levels.

Annemarie Kibbe of Laguna Niguel and Joshua Johnson of San Clemente received the award upon completion of lengthy, sustainable community service projects that are one of the many requirements for Quartermaster promotion. Kibbe’s project consisted of building much needed trophy shelves for Aliso Niguel High Schools band room. Kibbe will attend the Honors Program at Colorado State University to study engineering and plans to become involved in Engineers without Borders during her college experience and sets her sights on a career that will help others.

Johnson’s project was construction of a fence, gates, and rabbit fencing for the teaching garden at Concordia Elementary School.  With the completion of Quartermaster rank, Josh has now attained all of scouting’s highest ranks/awards: Eagle, Venturing Silver Award, and Quartermaster; less than 10 persons within the Orange County Council can lay claim this achievement and he is the first person to do so in the El Camino Real district (San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point).   He has also earned the Venturing Ranger Award, National Outdoor Achievement Medal, Eagle Silver Palm, and been recognized with Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow and is a recipient of the Venturing Leadership Award. Johnson will attend California Maritime Academy this Fall majoring in Mariner Transportation.
