Approximately 30,000 people wore Santa hats at tonight's Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim game at Angel Stadium to set the Guinness world record for the largest gathering of people wearing Santa hats.
At the start of the fifth inning, fans were asked to wear the Angels Santa hats they received entering the stadium for five consecutive minutes. After the five minutes elapsed, a Guinness World Records adjudicator officially certified the new record.
The previous record was 872.
This was the fifth consecutive season the Angels set a world record. The team set records for the largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets in 2010, most people wearing costume masks in 2011, largest gathering of people wearing cowboy hats in 2012 and largest gathering of people wearing wigs in 2013.
The world record attempt was part of the team's "1/2 Way to Christmas" celebration at the game against the Minnesota Twins, exactly six months before Christmas.
Angel Stadium was transformed to celebrate the Christmas season, with all entrances having large displays. The home plate gate had reindeer available to pet, snow falling and an inflatable Santa Claus and snowman. Fans were able to take pictures with Santa Claus on the center field terrace throughout the game.
