3 Flu Deaths in Orange County This Season

Another 38 people died this week from flu, according to state health officials, with 50 more deaths being investigated.

The flu has killed 38 more people this week in California, with another 50 deaths being investigated for flu causes, state health officials said Friday.

Three of the 45 confirmed flu deaths this season came from Orange County, including a 28-year-old from San Juan Capistrano.

The best protection against flu is vaccination, said Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health.

“We are clearly in the midst of what appears to be an earlier peaking, severe flu season, and I encourage everyone who has not yet gotten a flu vaccination to do so," he said.

The CDPH still has about 50,000 state-purchased doses available to local health departments, with no shortage expected.

Here are some health tips from the CDPH to help prevent the spread of the flu virus:

  • While sick, limit contact with others
  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing
  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based rub
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
