Are Apartments Bad for Mission Viejo?

Palmia residents are among some in Mission Viejo upset over high-density development approved by the Planning and Transportation Commission.

Some local residents are unhappy with the Planning and Transportation Committee's vote to approve an apartment project proposed on Los Alisos near Target.

The multi-family project would include 320 apartments, and 48 of them would be designated as affordable housing.

The opposition to this project contends that high-density and affordable housing bring crime with them. Others are concerned with traffic issues that may arise from such developments.

Initially, 250 condominiums were planned for the project, but that was before the real estate market collapsed. The developer changed gears and proposed plans for the rental units instead.

It may also take years for residents to regain the level of income they once enjoyed. In the meantime, they struggle to stay in their community while they rebuild their lives. Some may never fully recover,  and apartment living may be the only option for families eager to keep their children in their community and their schools.
