Former Mayor Remembers What Brought Her to Mission Viejo

Small-town appeal attracted many first-time home owners to Mission Viejo during the community's humble beginnings.

Sherri Butterfield first moved to Mission Viejo with her family in 1972, having been enticed by the idea of a friendly, small town with affordable housing.

Always passionate for politics, Butterfield ran for a seat on the Mission Viejo City Council in 1992. After coming in "third in a race for two seats," as she says, Butterfield was successfully elected in 1994, and served as our mayor in 1996, 1999, and 2000.

She says one of her greatest accomplishments was getting our current library built, an effort to replace the county branch that the town had vastly outgrown. Today, the structure sits across from city hall on the corner of La Paz and Marguerite, and Mayor Butterfield was named a "Hometown Hero" in 1997 for her efforts.
