Mission Viejo Animal Rescue Center Recieves $100K Grant from Ellen DeGeneres

Approximately 4,500 applications were submitted for the grant.

A Mission Viejo pet rescue center won a $100,000 grant from Ellen DeGeneres and Petco's foundation, officials announced Monday.

The Pet Rescue Center was the grand prize winner for rescuing Sammy, a male pit bull, from life as a bait dog. When the dog was rescued it had significant scars and fresh wounds.

Sammy later was able to provide a blood transfusion to another ailing puppy.

Sammy was later adopted by a family that initially skittish about perceptions of the breed, but later found him to have a happy-go-lucky attitude.

About 4,500 applications were submitted for the grant from the Petco Foundation and DeGeneres and her pet food company, Halo, Purely for Pets. The volume of applications led the Petco Foundation to boost the amount it was giving from $250,000 to $500,000. Thirty-three other groups throughout the country will also receive grants.
