Residents are prohibited from burning wood in their fireplaces starting at midnight tonight in Mission Viejo, through Saturday at midnight, because of elevated fine particulate levels predicted by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, officials said.

The no-burn alert will be in effect in Orange, greater Los Angeles County and the Inland Empire, the SCAQMD reported Friday. No-burn alerts are called when air quality is forecast to be unhealthy due to fine particulate levels known as PM2.5.  Wood smoke contains hundreds of contaminants including PM2.5, a pollutant linked to increased emergency room visits and hospitalizations, as well as increased risk of heart attacks and early deaths.

Anyone who is interested in finding out more about the no-burn alert order can check out airalerts.org and enter their zip codes. For more information on Check Before You Burn and alternatives to wood burning, visit healthyhearths.org.

Ridiculous beauractic money grab. And the geniuses will enforce this how?

Just like code enforcement, your neighbors snitch on you, they come out, and cite you. The fine is like $50 or an educational seminar (which I think you also pay for) unless you can prove your home's only heat source is the fireplace.

Typical pols finding another way to tax the average person....while they drive their Escalade back and forth to work belching toxic pollution into the air. Gotta love politically manufactured crises to raise taxes on the little guy to make sure the real polluters are protected... After all, they fill campaign war chests for re-election.

Pretty sure no one is gaining wealth off of this and the cost to enforce it is likely at a loss...

Well, at least this no burn stuff will be easier to enforce that that unconstitutional sex offender law. That said, if our politicians weren't so afraid to admit that they can't keep cutting taxes, that society actually needs us to pay more in taxes, and they would re-educated the mouth breathers who think they benefit from the ultra rich paying less in taxes than they do....
