Santa Ana Winds to Increase Fire Threat

The Santa Ana winds are expected to blow in Monday at the same time the current heat wave is expected to peak.

The Santa Ana winds are expected to blow in Monday to start October off with an elevated fire danger.

Offshore winds gusting up to 30 mph, 100-degree-plus inland temperatures and low relative humidities predicted for Monday will increase the chance of a  destructive wildfire, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a fire weather and excessive heat watches for inland and valley areas through Tuesday.

Record breaking temperatures approaching 100 degrees are predicted for inland and valley areas Monday, when the offshore winds are expected to peak. The NWS urged people planning to be outdoors, or those without air conditioning, to follow these safety tips:

   — wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing;
    — drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids;
    — avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day; and
    — never leave pets, children or the elderly unattended in a vehicle

Even with the windows rolled down in a vehicle, temperatures can climb to life-threatening levels within minutes.

I'm glad weatherbug (the weather widget next to the "SanJuanCapistranoPatch" logo on top) provides a more accurate picture of what the week will look like. Accuweather on the other hand says that it'll be 78 on Wednesday and 72 on Friday. http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/san-juan-capistrano-ca/92675/september-weather/2178537

Sometimes (you have to check) what appears to be the real time reading or forecast is actually for the nearest NWS weather station which may not be representative or accurate. For example, I once entered 92688 (RSM) for real time weather and displayed (in really fine print) were numbers "as reported at Santa Ana John Wayne Airport". The absolute best weather website is the "horse's mouth" and that is www.weather.gov. Read the "Forecast Discussion" as that is straight from the meteorologists.

You'll get it just in time for the high temps to drop into the 60s F for the next seven months.
