Writers Presents - Brian Selznick

Brian Selznick, winner of the prestigious "Caldecott Medal," will appear in the City's popular Writers Present Program on Thursday, October 20.

Selznick’s 7 p.m. appearance is in the Sycamore Room at the Norman P. Murray Community Center, 24932 Veterans Way. The event is expected to attract hundreds of fans of all ages.

Selznick is an accomplished artist and author whose illustrations for Barbara Kerley's "The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins" won a Caldecott Honor Award in 2002. Six years later, he won the award for his groundbreaking and breathtaking novel, "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," the first book of more than 500 pages aimed at elementary and middle-school readers to receive the award. The Caldecott Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children published that year.

"The Invention of Hugo Cabret" is a gripping mystery about an orphan who lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station. The book has been made into a 3D-screen adaptation - “Hugo” - that is directed by Martin Scorsese and is expected in theaters nationwide on November 23.

Selznick will also discuss his latest novel, "Wonderstruck," which tells the story of two children separated by 50 years. With more than 460 pages of original artwork, the book takes readers on an awe-inspiring journey.

The author will field questions during the presentation, which will be followed by a book signing.

Books purchased at the event will be available for signing.
