Spotted: Drumming in Alicia Park

Usually softball reigns at Alicia Park in the spring, but lately a drummer has used the public space to play

Most afternoons at there are softball games and practices this time of year. The air is filled with the sounds of girls chattering and cheering, the crack of bats and children playing on the playground.

But lately another sound can be heard across the park—the rapid drumming of graduate Brandon Shaw, 20.

Shaw was recently accepted into the Musicians Institute in Hollywood.

He's been staying with a friend nearby, but in order to be a polite houseguest he saves the drums for the park, he said.

Monday was the first time he'd come alone, Shaw said. But he's made music in the park before.

"We've been out here before, me and the church band," he said.

He plays with a couple of guitarists for the Faith, Hope and Love Chapel in Irvine.

Now that he's been accepted into the institute, Shaw hopes to secure some scholarships. And that's what the drumming is all about, he said.

You can catch Shaw at the park over the next seven weeks, where he will be practicing for about an hour a day in the afternoons.
