Take a Break from the Beach, Mission Viejo Says

With its new DiscoverMissionViejo.com website launched this summer, Mission Viejo city officials want to highlight all the cultural resources and events the town has to offer residents and visitors.

In Orange County, if you want your city to compete with the beach for visitors and even your own residents, you have to take some action.

That's why the city of Mission Viejo has been building their cultural arts offerings and organizing big city-wide events. And to promote it all to residents and visitors, they launched DiscoverMissionViejo.com earlier this summer.

"We've put a lot of work into community art programs and activities, so the website can help promote some of those programs," said Dru Maurer, the city's cultural services supervisor.

For instance, July 27, the city will host the Pacific Symphony on the Village Green at Oso Viejo Park.

The site also highlights dozens of events and programs hosted by the city for kids and adults, as well as photo galleries from the events and activities the site advertises, such as the Arts Alive street painting festival, or the colorfully illustrated Bears About Town sculptures.

"There are so many beach cities in Orange County it's nice to draw other people from other communities," Maurer said on efforts to build cultural programs in the city.

As for the website:

"We still have more to add to it," she said. "It's kind of a work in progress."
