Matside Week 2--Epic Matches

Click on the video to watch one heckuva barn burner!

If you are just tuning in, you are in the middle of a series of videos introducing the casual fan to the sport of wrestling.  The previous week we covered match scoring.  Next week will be match structure (week 3).

This week we are taking a break from the informational videos and posting a video of a full length match.  This one is of an "epic match," one of the most well-known and exciting matches in United States wrestling.  It is actually pretty hard to narrow down the field to a select few "epic matches" because our sport is rife with exciting bouts, but regardless this one is a barn burner, and is an upset to boot.

This match occurred in 1996 NCAA D1, between Lock Haven's Cary Kolat--ranked #1 at the time and considered one of the country's most dangerous and most dominant wrestlers--versus Iowa's Mark Ironside, ranked #2 at the time.  Kolat was already legend at the time: a four time undefeated high school state champion from Pennsylvania, he was NCAA runner-up previously.  Ironside, a two time state champion in high school, placed sixth at the NCAA tournament in 1995.

The last minute of the third period (wrestling matches last three periods.  More on that next week) is fast and fierce.
