Aftermath: Gas Grab at Mission Viejo Shell Station

A free gas promotion on La Paz and Chrisanta created long lines and pleased customers.

A free gas promotion by SoCal Honda created long lines at the Shell gas station at La Paz and Chrisanta Friday morning.

A handful of Honda drivers were circling the station's parking lot before the blue-hat-wearing Honda promoters arrived.

By 10 a.m., with free gas flowing from the pumps, a line had wrapped around the intersection.

Mikey Perez, a Saddleback College student from Mission Viejo, was grateful for the fill-up.

"It's actually really nice because it helps me get back and forth to school," he said.

Elaine Maiolo—mother of Mission Viejo Christian Church pastor Mike Maiolo—said a text from her daughter alerted her to the gas grab. Her daughter heard about it from Mission Viejo Patch, she said.

Brian Mac brought two of his young boys to the pump. He needed a full tank after two days back and forth to Legoland, he said.

While drivers got full tanks of gas until 10:30 a.m., the promotion carried over until about 11 a.m., Team Lead Stacey Vaughn said. For the remaining cars, $25 gas vouchers were given away, she said.

"Because of the volume of people we did $25, just to do something for everyone who was there," she explained.

She said she met several colorful Honda owners, including one man who's been following SoCal Honda on social media for his chance at free gas. He finally got the gas today, she said.
