Black Friday Deals Lure Thousands

Shoppers battle for the 2012 holiday season's deals and steals.

As Thanksgiving Day celebrations came to a close, shoppers swarmed into local stores' maddening sales and giveaway opportunities late Thursday and early Friday. Parking lots became packed as cars honked and people yelled at one another for parking spaces. One car even brought a megaphone and was shouting at the frantic drivers.

At a local Walmart, people clustered around the electronics department, which featured a 60-inch Vizio TV with built-in wi-fi apps for $698. Elsewhere, shoppers frantically crowded the disarrayed aisles, some pushing two carts per person, making the aisles much like parking lot traffic: stopped dead.

“It’s the same rush every year,” said Walmart patron Nancy Canchola. “Even the workers don’t know where things are. It’s getting worse every year.”

Other shoppers opted to camp outside Tilly’s, Old Navy and Target for give-aways.

“I’ve been waiting here since 7 p.m.,” said Tilly’s patron Jackie Rojas. “The first 100 people get a free Tilly’s giftcard that’s valued between $10 and $100.”

The bundled-up Rojas returned to her slumber on the pavement as she waited in the chilly evening for the store to open at 5 a.m.

Some brisk Black Friday sales stats just in. But I don't think it's the type that you want to use to indicate or support an argument of economic growth: www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2012/11/26/black-friday-gun-sales/1727409

This doesn't surprise me. The next day, local news stations featured footage of people pummeling each other and I think in one of the tapes, someone pulled out a gun...scary stuff.

My guess it's more for defensive purposes. Take a simple set of facts here in California. Prisoners are being released early because of overcrowding. The unemployment rate is around 10% and law enforcement budgets are/have been cut.

I like the young girl in the article & her commenting on a story that featured her & her family. I like that she expressed happiness & excitement at having a great adventure with her family and getting a $100 gift card. Isn't that what the story is about? This is a good memory that she won't forget, it's not even about the money. Think about it, hmm.... isn't the season about togetherness with friends and family?
