Monstrous Half-Bacon, Half-Beef Burger Invades South County

Peanut butter and jelly hamburgers? Monday is the grand opening of Slater's 50/50 in South County.

Would you like fries with that? How about strawberry jelly, Fritos or beer-battered jalapeños?

As you read this, Slater's 50/50 has just opened in Lake Forest at 24356 Swartz Ave., last a Hooter's restaurant.

And that means Five Guys, Smashburger and The Counter will need to make room for a new competitor offering unusual toppings and aiming for fast-casual diner dollars.

Slater's gets its name for its most famous hybrid, the 50/50 burger—50 percent ground bacon and 50 percent ground beef. Like their other burger patties, that comes in three sizes—1/3 pound, 2/3 pound or one full pound.

And that's the weight after they cook the burger.

The restaurant opened Sunday night to Yelpers and members of the media.

Jesus, one of the 130 new workers hired to run Slater's in Lake Forest, guaranteed diners will leave full. His drive to work is about four minutes, he said.
