Nothing Bundt Yum!

If you have a sweet tooth, check out what's cooking in this Mission Viejo bakery.

Sometimes a little sweetness will do the trick. This place keeps catching my eye as I drive past the Santa Margarita Parkway location.

Intrigued, I did a little research online, as I am wont to do before I sample anyone’s wares.

“What is she talking about now,” you ask?

I am talking about . NBC is a franchise (bundt only) cakery that recently opened here in Mission Viejo. Normally I steer clear of reviewing food chains or franchises because, well, who cares? I'm not a big fan of mass-produced food.

But I like a good dessert as much as the next guy so let‘s play.

Gabrielle, Drew and I stopped by NBC on the way home from school and we were pleased to see that there were samples set out and they were chocolate. Nuff said? Maybe not? Just make a mental note that I am a chocoholic to the umpteenth degree.

These little bite-sized morsels were delicious. And it wasn’t just me: the kids fully agreed.

The samples were enough of a distraction that I didn’t notice the variety of girly merchandise that surrounded us at every turn. Not really into cute or kitsch. Well, I’m just here for the food, but I could appreciate the appeal of the merchandise.

Back to business. We made our way to the display case and a charming young woman offered her assistance. These little treats range in size from bite-sized (bundtini) to personal-sized (bundtlet) to 8- and 10-inch cakes. You can stack them, mix them up, add your school colors and dress them for any occasion.

There are no less that nine flavors to choose from but I wasn’t ready to go mental. We decided on the bundlets in four flavors: marble, lemon, chocolate and red velvet.

We took them home and admired their cuteness. Briefly. Then we dug in.

The texture and moistness was superb. This is important in cakes so pay attention.

Each flavor was drizzled with cream cheese frosting and I am of the mind that this frosting will compliment almost any cake flavor.

Red velvet was my son’s choice but we all felt that the chocolate chips that were added to the cake ruined that red velvet experience. It's not traditional, and not necessary.

The chocolate was good, but again, the experience was dampened by the chocolate chips that were added to the cake. I’m a bit of a purist, let the flavor speak for itself.

Our lemon choice was fabulous. Loved it with the cream cheese frosting and it had the perfect amount of lemon flavor.

Our absolute favorite was the marble cake. Who knew? I haven’t had marble cake since I was a kid and I am a fan once again.

We can’t wait to go back and try the cinnamon swirl and the carrot cake.

I don’t buy cakes very often, bundt you never know....
