The Ranch Plan, More Houses, on the Horizon

Talks with builders begin this summer on the 23,000-acre housing project.

In July or August, officials of Rancho Mission Viejo plan to begin the development of the Ranch Plan, a community of 14,000 homes that will be located east of Ladera Ranch.

The Ranch Plan will consist of:

  • Nine separate areas of development, called "villages," stretching from the border of Camp Pendleton Marine Base to the 241 Toll Road.
  • 23,000 acres of land, 17,000 acres undeveloped and dedicated to species protection, cattle-grazing and citrus farming.
  • 14,000 homes meant for a variety of residents, including senior communities.

The Ranch Plan was approved by the Orange County Board of Supervisors in 2004. A lawsuit was filed against Rancho Mission Viejo by five environmental groups and was settled in 2005, increasing the amount of open land. The economic downturn has slowed the development process ever since.

According to RMV Spokeswoman Diane Gaynor, the first "village" of 1,200 homes is planned for construction at the intersection of Antonio and Ortega Highway.

While RMV builders have already begun talking with builders, the timeframe of the new housing community is still tentative.

"We are optimistic, but if we are unable to move forward (on this time frame), we are willing to wait until a later date," said Gaynor. She says that so far responses with builders have been strong.
