Holiday shoppers will have one more option this season when Walmart opens a new store Wednesday morning near the Irvine Spectrum.
The new outlet will open at 7:30 a.m. on 71 Technology Drive. The company estimates it will generate 300 new jobs.
In some towns, such as Encinitas, the opening of a new Walmart is cause for protest. In Irvine, the mayor says the store is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
"This is a reflection of a strong local economy that makes companies like Walmart confident moving forward," said Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang.
The new store will have grocery and pharmacy areas. It will be open from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.
The store will be 134,376 square feet, according to the company.
