The Most Obvious Question To Ask

I am glad there are states that understand this country was founded on equality and freedom and that you can't have one without the other. The argument that you can...

My younger brother, Sam, just got engaged. He’s 56 years old. What they used to call “a confirmed bachelor.” Sam and Keith have been together for a long time, since Jesus was in the eighth grade or something; I’ve had two wives in the time they’ve been together.

You see, Keith just got a job in Manhattan, and the state of New York believes that equal means equal and so on. Keith currently works in San Francisco and lives with Sam in Sonoma. They moved from San Francisco to Sonoma not so long ago. San Francisco is supposedly the “Gay Mecca” of the United States. And it probably is, but the state San Francisco is located in is completely backward and hell-bent on discrimination.

So Keith and Sam are engaged and going to get married and I am completely thrilled for them. I’m kind of hoping I get asked to be an usher or something. Although I know I don’t have the clothing for it.

Our niece Kate considered not marrying Larry until everyone who loved someone could get married. Notice I said “someone” and not a dog. (Sorry about that last sentence, but this is Orange County and we need to explain that sort of thing.)

I am glad there are states that understand this country was founded on equality and freedom and that you can’t have one without the other. The argument that you can is stunningly stupid and completely un-American. That is if you truly believe we are a “beacon of liberty and equality for the world.” Personally, I’ve never seen a valid reason to believe that.

Sam and Keith plan on living in Connecticut – just like a lot of heterosexual professionals who work in Manhattan have done for a long time. Connecticut will also consider them married. I guess quite a few of the original colonies have figured out this equal stuff now. Not the slave states that vote Republican, of course; oh no, they are still dead set against two people of the same gender who love each other having the same rights as they do. Of course, people, including the mentally retarded, are still executed in many of the slave states, so we really can’t expect them to understand. They are, after all, the states who clung to the notion of being able to own and sell other human beings; truth be told they are still more than a little miffed they still can buy and sell humans.

Just as an aside have you ever noticed just how much of our money has the visage of a slave owner on it? There are a lot of obvious clues as to just how messed up we really are. Seriously…if the playing field is level like you claim why haven’t we removed the slave owners from our money? Do we really expect people “of color,” or any color for that matter, to revere slave owners?

Anyway, I’m venting. I’m angry because it’s stupid to deny people being who they are. It’s also a sin. At least where I come from it’s a sin. And the questions one needs to ask to dispel ignorance are always so damn simple. Just watch the video above, or click here.
