Single Mom of Four Sons Accidentally Wins $14M Lotto

When she learned that she won, Thuan Le ran screaming out of the store.

MISSION VIEJO, CA -- When Thuan Le, a single mother of four boys, entered the CVS Pharmacy on Santa Margarita Parkway, she followed her usual routine. She spent $5: $4 on Powerball lottery tickets, $1 on SuperLotto Plus.

But something was different this time. She accidentally slipped $6 into the machine.

She thought, "I might as well get another SuperLotto Plus ticket," state lotto officials said. The sixth ticket was the big payout, winning her $14 million.

When she discovered she had won Thursday morning, she ran out of the store screaming. Le plans to buy a house, travel and visit her parents in Vietnam.

The store gets a piece of the winnings, too. Half a percent will be given to CVS, which totals $70,000.

Here's more from the California Lottery:

Thuan Le is a hard-working single mother of four sons. She is also very excitable. In fact, when she ran her SuperLotto Plus ticket through the terminal and realized she had won a $14 million jackpot, she ran screaming out of the store! Luckily, Le received the information on how to claim her ticket and went to the California Lottery’s Santa Ana District Office to do just that.

Le and a friend usually go together and buy their Lottery tickets at the same time, but yesterday, Le went by herself to purchase her usual $4 worth of POWERBALL® and $1 in SuperLotto Plus from her local CVS Pharmacy. She accidentally put $6 in the self-service terminal and bought her tickets. When she realized she still had $1 in credit, she thought, “I might as well get another SuperLotto Plus ticket.” That 6th ticket was the winner.

(Thursday) morning, when her friend asked if she had checked her tickets yet, she replied she hadn’t, so the friend went to get the winning numbers. When she returned with them and they all matched, Le rushed over to check for herself. Shortly after that is when she left screaming. Le called her sons and one of them came over to take her to claim her prize. “We thought she was joking,” her son explained, “but we thought would she really joke like this? My older brother said, ‘yes, she would’.”  They quickly realized she was not joking and couldn’t be happier for their mom. Le plans to buy a house, travel, and visit her parents in Vietnam.

Le’s ticket was purchased at the CVS Pharmacy located at 27750 Santa Margarita Parkway in Mission Viejo (Orange County). The winning numbers were 5, 33, 25, 46, 32, and the Mega number 26. CVS Pharmacy will receive a bonus of one half percent, or $70,000, for selling the winning ticket.

I wonder if this Vietnamese women on welfare. Many are due to their status as refugees (the boat people). People from east asia seldom qualifies for welfare when they comes as legal immigrants to U.S.A. Many Vietnamese people on welfare and work under the table as waitresses, etc. Some on welfare with lots of children and just don't want to work. I think if she is on welfare, then why she use her welfare money to buy lottery tickets?? Most welfare people do buy lottery tickets weekly hoping to become rich and not having to work.

How will CVS use the 70k? Will the corporation keep it? Will they divide it among all the employees of that store (which they should)? Does the 70k come out of her winnings?

You know damn well she is at least getting Food Stamps! The tax payers paid for her ticket. We are letting all the rejects come over hear from Third World Countries who will never contribute to society and only take, take, take! There is nothing RACIST about speaking the truth. The liberals are ruining this country. Don Smith

Hey Mark, if you read the article, it said she is a hard working mom. Most Vietnamese people I know are EXTREMELY hard workers. Here's the line from the article that you must have missed. Thuan Le is a hard-working single mother of four sons

You know nothing of the sort. Stop being so judgemental Don! My mother was a single mom of nine and worked really hard to support us after our gutless turd of a father walked out the door after twenty years of marriage. He never paid support. My mother worked as a telephone operator, never relied on food stamps or welfare other than the two years she used it to get job training and we moved on. You and Mark are nothing but racists!

Hello Mark, you know that every immigrant came to this country for freedom, democracy, education, ect... and also the opportunity. I was the one, who came to this country 30 years ago by myself, with no english, no money and had nothing and first 6 months i was on welfare, for food stamp, medicare, and after that i found a job then work til now been working for almost 30 years now. i paid income tax, sale tax, ect... every year. so this country feed me up at first then i got the job then help somebody else need help like as i was 30 years ago. That is how this country policies, maybe your grandpas or your grandmas were the same situation when they got here in the past. Particularly, in her case the mother of 4, she is the hard worker person, she take care of her kids. Then the kids grow up, get educations, jobs, then pay tax ( for the rest of their life )and that tax money will help someone else, who have less opportunity than you and me. I'm not talking about is she been on welfare or not ? she legally earn the social profits if she had 4 young kids, who are under 18 year of ages. Mark, everybody have the same equal opportunities in this country. thanks

To Mark 2013...how ignorant can you be?! I was a customer of hers for 16 years. She rarely took vacations and was at her shop from morning until night. You should be ashamed of yourself and stop being a racist! Take a look and see who claims the most welfare, food stamsp, etc. and it certainly won't be the vietnamese. Grow Up!

Good for her. I live close by to that CVS! Happy to know that someone struck gold with the lotto around my neighborhood! Side note: When will people realize that EVERYONE (aside from the Native Americans) has at least one family member that came to the United States, as an immigrant? The ignorant, racist comments above are unnecessary and completely unfounded. Where are you at, moderators?
