Update: Quick Facts on Accused Killer Scott Dekraai

New details emerge about the man accused of the worst mass-murder in Orange County history.

Since the arrest of Scott Evans Dekraai, 41, a former sportfishing captain accused of murdering eight and wounding one at a Seal Beach hair salon, news agencies have been clamouring for a closer look into the life of the suspected killer.

Here's a quick rundown of what we know so far:

  • In 2007, Dekraai was that killed deckhand Piper Cameroncutting her in two as Dekraai tried to save her—and nearly severed Dekraai's legs.
  • He was so disabled from the accident that he . He recently married that caretaker, Mindy, in the backyard of their Huntington Beach home.
  • He has been .
  • Dekraai filed for divorce from his second wife, Michelle, soon after the tugboat accident. Since then, he has fought with her in court over custody of their son. Most recently, the two appeared in court together Tuesday.
  • Dekraai owned a T-shirt company, Bendo, more than a decade ago. Tagline for the shirts? "Combat Fishing Gear."
  • He was described as an who did "squidlike" abstracts.
  • Neighbor Stephanie Malchow said Dekraai shared gardening tips and plants, gave birthday gifts to newborns and joined the Neighborhood Watch program. "I don’t want people to think he is just an evil monster," she said. "He’s a nice guy, but he must have snapped."
  • The truck believed to belong to Dekraai has a license plate holder reading "Help Save America www.JoinTheTeaParty.us"
  • In August 2010, Dekraai sent $300 to a special interest group called Stop This Insanity, which formerly owned the website JoinTheTeaParty.us.
  • When police found Dekraai two blocks from the salon where the massacre took place, he was wearing a bulletproof vest.
  • Contrary to some news reports saying Dekraai is a former Marine, Maj. Shawn Haney of the U.S. Marine Corps said he does not show up on any of their enlistment records.

Just because he "seemed" like a nice neighbor doesn't make him a nice guy... his track record of failed marriages prove this. He IS an "evil monster", most people who "snap" just don't go on killing sprees wearing a bullet-proof vest...

Good idea, Peter. Nothing yet on the ex-military contention?

Not yet, Pan. I have a call in to the Department of Veterans Affairs. If we get confirmation on this one, I'll update this story.

So if you get a divorce you are a monster. Good to know!

Seems like this gent would know - though whether he chooses to disclose is a whole nuther matter, I guess.
"'I've known him since he was little,' said Don Ashley, owner of Long Beach's Pierpoint Landing, a sportfishing company where Dekraai worked for about 10 years. 'He was a good guy. He loved fishing and being out on the water.' Ashley, who went to Wilson High School with Dekraai's parents, said Dekraai's grandfather began bringing him down to the harbor to volunteer on the waterfront at age 12." http://www.presstelegram.com/ci_19105724

My thought exactly.

So how old is he? In one article it said he graduated high school in 87 which would make him 42 approx. He looks older in his pictures. Its funny how people want to associate his crime with the tea party, because its political obviously. Didn't he have a bumper sticker supporting a NFL team also? Is there a connection between football and violence?
Roy Rivenburg (Editor) October 15, 2011 at 05:03 am
He's just shy of 42. The tailgate of his truck displayed a Raiders emblem.
Kerry October 15, 2011 at 01:49 pm
The original Raiders, the Vikings, were quite violent. They would swoop on unsuspecting towns, killing and plundering. Maybe there is a connection.

Good comeback, Kerry.
If people are going to say he's crazy based on the fact that he's a tea party supporter, then by the same logic, they'd have to conclude that he's crazy because he's a Raiders supporter ... because you know how insane Raiders fans are. "Raiders fan what a surprise" There's definitely a connection.

Some interesting points being made here in the comments. I've updated the story to include Dekraai's age. As for the Raiders bumper sticker, I couldn't find anything that confirmed this fact. Does anyone else have a link?

Tom Thumb you didn't read section 1021(b)(2) closely enough. It wouldn't apply to those arming theRead More rebels because of the word "suspicion." We know they are arming the rebels. See the difference. 1021(b)(2) only applies to those we "suspect" like you. Notice how the word "reasonable" doesn't appear anywhere near "suspicion"? Hmmmm wonder why that would be. Section 1021(b)(2) seems to be the modern day "suspicion of lurking with intent."
Tom Thumb June 16, 2013 at 02:31 pm
Shoot, I don't know about that. What we are hearing now is Obama/McCain are pushing to arm theRead More rebels who are supporting and are part of Al Qaeda: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22095099

Hey Avery, I am totally stealing the "suspicion of lurking with intent" phrase. It mightRead More even flourish on reddit.
You're welcome!

Graphs like this are sometimes created (and/or distributed) by persons with a deep understandingRead More (and/or appreciation) of things like this: 3. Don't toy with me, what happened to 1. and 2.? Is this some sort of Star Wars Jedi mind trickery onRead More sequence?
