Census: Mission Viejo in 2010, Fewer Teens, Less White

Although Orange County grew by about 6 percent in the last decade, the population of Mission Viejo stayed mostly stable.

Mission Viejo has fewer teens and is a little less white in 2010 than it was in 2000, according to census data released by the U.S. Census Bureau Tuesday.

The number of people living here has barely changed, though, at about 93,000. This year's census records only 203 more people living in Mission Viejo in 2010 than in 2000.

In 2000, 27.1 percent of the city was under age 18. Last year only 22.8 percent of the city were minors.

In terms of race, the largest gain in population was amongst latinos. Latinos made up 17 percent of Mission Viejo in 2010, compared to 12.1 percent in 2000. There are slightly fewer latinos countywide as of 2010, though.

The percentage of Asians also grew slightly, from 7.7 percent of the city's total population in 2000 to 9.1 percent last year.

Whites made up 79.8 percent of the city's population in 2010, down from 83.2 percent in 2000. Of the roughly 74,500 whites living in Mission Viejo, 14 percent also claim hispanic or latino heritage.

According to the Census Bureau, "Hispanics may be of any race."

Orange County's total population rose by 5.8 percent to 3,010,232.
