Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple and its former CEO, died Wednesday. He was 56.
"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today," read a statement by Apple's board of directors.
Jobs was instrumental in many of the inventions and institutions of the last three decades. From the iPod, the iPad and the iPhone to the animation studio Pixar, Jobs invested time and money into success after success.
Jobs had been ailing for some time. According to 2004 reports, he publicly announced that he had pancreatic cancer. In 2009, Jobs received a liver transplant.
Said Jobs in a 2005 commencement address at Stanford University: "Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose."
