Relay for Life of Mission Viejo Event This Saturday June 1st

Mission Viejo community members fight the fight to find a cure

This Saturday, June 1st at 9 a.m. marks the beginning of the annual Mission Viejo Relay for Life event. The Relay for Life event hopes to raise $113,000 to fight cancer– so far they have raised $94,632.01! Relay for Life events are organized overnight community fundraising walks. This year, the Mission Viejo Event will be located at Saddleback College with over forty three teams camping around the track and walking around the clock. Throughout the night there will be games, food, and entertainment.

The first Relay for Life event started with a single participant, Dr. Gordy Klatt, in May 1985 when he ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington.  Dr. Klatt raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society to help fight cancer. The next year there were 340 supporters who joined the event. Since the first event in 1985, Relay for Life has grown into a global movement raising more than $4 billion to fight cancer. For 28 years, Relay for Life has provided hope and inspiration for cancer survivors and caregivers across the globe.

With summer on the horizon, the Mission Viejo Solar Program will be providing sunscreen packets and educational handouts about skin cancer prevention. Make sure to stop by and pick up your free sunscreen from the Mission Viejo Solar Program booth from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on June 1st during the heat of the day! The program is administered by Sullivan Solar Power, and offers residents the opportunity to get paid to get solar. Through this program residents are able to go solar for no upfront cost and receive up to $2,000 cash back. The three-month initiative will come to a close on June 3, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. Homeowners who want to participate in the Mission Viejo Solar Program are encouraged to visit MissionViejoSolarProgram.org or to call 1.800.SULLIVAN.
