The Pet Rescue Center Receives $5,000 Grant from ASPCA

Mission Viejo Non-Profit Chosen by donors in the ASPCA Founders Society

Mission Viejo, Calif. – The Pet Rescue Center has received a $5,000 Grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®). The Mission Viejo-based non-profit was nominated for the Founder’s Choice Grant and was one of three organizations throughout the United States to receive the award. The grant funds will be used to help with “pre-adoption” expenses of dogs and cats saved from local high-kill animal shelters and other at-risk situations.

“We are honored to be chosen to receive a grant from the ASPCA,” explained Blythe Wheaton, Executive Director and Co-Founder of The Pet Rescue Center. “This is a huge vote of confidence from a well-known and widely respected organization, and these funds will enable us to save more dogs and cats from unnecessary euthanasia.”

The Founders Choice Grant Contest is an opportunity for donors who are part of the APSCA Founder’s Society to nominate an animal welfare group that they believe is doing great work in their community.  Voting took place through the end of June, and The Pet Rescue Center, the only California organization in the contest, was one of the top three organizations with the highest number of votes.  Mission Viejo resident Jill Nesbitt nominated the organization for the award. The Pet Rescue was co- founded by Blythe and Dr. Matthew Wheaton of Alicia Pet Care Center in 2007.

“The ASPCA Founder’s Choice Grant Contest is a unique opportunity for our most dedicated supporters to be the voice for their local animal groups,” explains Alicia Meulensteen, vice president of direct response and stewardship at the ASPCA. “The Pet Rescue Center was one of our top vote-getters, and we are proud to provide them with this grant to further support their mission.”

The Pet Rescue Center recently saved nine dogs from the county animal shelter in Orange, three of which were scheduled for euthanasia on the day that they were rescued. In the first seven months of 2013, The Pet Rescue Center saved more than 80 dogs and cats from possible euthanasia. Some of these animals needed major medical treatment, and all of the dogs and cats were spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, dewormed, flea treated, and fully vaccinated prior to being made available for adoption. The ASPCA grant will help cover these pre-adoption expenses for the animals saved during the coming months.
