3 Outstanding Mission Viejo Seniors Win Scholarships

The Mission Viejo Activity Committee recently awarded three, outstanding high school seniors with a $1,000 scholarship each.

The Mission Viejo Activities Committee recently awarded each of three outstanding high school seniors with a $1,000 scholarship.

The scholarships are based on:

  • volunteerism in the community;
  • academic achievements;
  • leadership skills;
  • school participation; and
  • ability to succeed

According to Margot Ferron, scholarship chairperson, MVAC has awarded more than $50,000 in scholarships since 2001. MVAC is a group of volunteers who plan many events in Mission Viejo—“”, and , just to name a few.

The recipients of our 2012 scholarships are:

  • Maryssa Spires, Mission Viejo High School;
  • Bryce Kelley, Trabuco Hills High School; and
  • David Fenn, Aliso Niguel High School.

Spires has volunteered over 900 hours in her community. She has been a volunteer of the Mission Viejo Activities Committee for five years and pitches in wherever she is needed. She has also volunteered with PEACE service at Saddleback Church. Among her awards is a Gold Award with the Girl Scouts.

This year at Mission Viejo High School, she is president of Empower, Lead, Excel, head chair with Model United Nations and she plays on the lacrosse team.  Spires will be attending California Polytechnic-San Luis Obispo, CA and plans to major in Biology Pre-Med.

Fenn has volunteered at Age Well Senior Services and Meals on Wheels of Mission Viejo for the last six years. At Aliso Niguel High School, David ran cross country and track and field. He is involved in many on-campus activities including the Writing Club and National Honor Society. As the current editor for his school paper, he was awarded Excellence in Editorials. David will be attending UC San Diego and plans to major in Urban/Environmental Planning.

Kelley has volunteered more than 600 hours at Saddleback Church. At Saddleback Church, he has led a Bible study and been on mission trips to Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic. Kelley has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. 

At Trabuco High School, he is on the link crew and the tennis team. In addition, Kelley has been involved with the Associated Student Body for several years and currently serves as student body president. He will be attending Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA, majoring in youth ministry with a minor in international business.

Anyone within the city of Mission Viejo or the surrounding area is welcome to join MVAC. There are no dues or fees. We welcome you to put your talents to work. The committee meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm at the Norman Murray Community Center, 24932 Veterans Way, Mission Viejo, CA 92692.
