Double Header to Feature the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team
Double Header Saturdeay features the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team.
The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team plays all over the country and we are honored that they have included Mission Viejo on their tour again this year.
WWAST’s goal is to raise money while creating awareness for medical, financial and personal needs of military veterans in addition to promoting research and development of high-quality prostheses.

On Sat., March 9 at 11:30 a.m. the charity benefit begins. The team will play a double header at the Youth Athletic Park, Field 4 at Lake Mission Viejo, 22056 Olympiad Rd.

The 14 players on the team come from 12 different states and travel the country with their coach, David Van Sleet. They are veterans and active duty soldiers whose injuries have resulted in amputations while in the military.
Their motto is "Life without a Limb is Limitless."

They have had various amputations of the arm, hand, foot, bilateral below knee and above the knee. Currently, some members still serve in the military and go to college while other members are in new careers.
In the first game that starts at 1 p.m., WWAST will play against a team comprised of south Orange County Veterans and first responders. The second game, a celebrity exhibition will follow at 3:30 p.m. and consist of three innings.
Teams will be comprised of wounded warriors, Olympians and former athletes. Confirmed former athletes are Angels pitcher Justin Speir, Angels player Rod Carew, Los Angeles Dodger Roy Gleason, NFL Punter Mike Horan and USC football player Chris Gali. Olympians include three-time USA softball gold medalist Leah O’Brien-Amico and Nigerian-born basketball player Emeka Okenwa.
Tickets that include a barbecue and raffle opportunity are $25 for adults and $10 for 17 years old and under. Kids under 5 years old are free. Active-duty military and veterans receive a $5 discount. Some of the silent auction prizes are tickets for prime seating at Clippers, Angels, Dodgers and Lakers games, signed baseball bats and guitars, restaurant gift certificates and much more.
