Up in the Air Takes Flight—No Wings Required!

Up in the Air was a whimsical air affair to remember.

With their feet on the grass, their eyes in the sky, more than 4,000 people gathered to experience a day of things that fly. There’s no doubt that “Up in the Air” was a kid friendly event, but don’t tell the adults that. Children and adults alike raced in a fury to watch the OC Sheriff’s helicopter land on the grass.

“Up in the Air – Mission Viejo Takes Flight” was whimsical. It was an air affair, a blast. Volunteers of the Mission Viejo Activities Committee are the heart and soul of “Up in the Air.” They planned the free event for the community that included synchronized kites to music, remote controlled planes flying high, disc dog shows, Rainforest Cafe exhibition with birds and a juggling, stilt walker.

BMX bicycle stunt team wowed the crowd with their extreme stunts. Bikes flew high-flipping and spiraling in the air. Did you know Superman can frontflip, flare boomerang, tailwhip, can can, one hander, pogo—just to name a few?

Dog in da sky—did you see that! It wasn’t just bikes flying, our furry friends got in the act chasing flying discs. Disc dogs rock!

Terry Tuzzolino had fun and said, “Nice job MVAC and all your helpers. Thank you for putting together a really nice family event for our community.”

It wasn’t just about fun. Several nonprofits participated and shared information about their organizations- The American Cancer Society Relay for Life/Mission Viejo, St. Kilians Catholic Church Filipino American Ministry, Philip Reilly Elementary School PTA, VFW Post 6024 and the YMCA.

“The Mission Viejo Activities Committee wanted to implement a unique event for families to enjoy and create lasting memories.  Based on the response from the community and the smiling faces at the event, I believe we achieved our goal,” exclaimed Mark Nix, Chairman, Up in the Air.
