"The Good Side of the Grass"- Margot Ferron

"The Good Side of the Grass"- celebrate life through music with Michael McGuire. McGuire has performed for Relay for Life.

On Sun., Nov. 4 at 7 pm in the Saddleback Room at the Mission Viejo City Hall, 200 Civic Center, MV, CA 92692, the Tromboneologists will join Michael McGuire in his celebration on the good side of the grass.

In Dec. 2011, McGuire was diagnosed with cancer and went through two surgeries to remove a large, mass that inhibited the base of his tongue and neck.   Taking control, McGuire had a cutting edge surgery called Trans Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) performed at the University of Pennsylvania.  The advantages to TORS versus a more traditional surgical approach is it doesn’t require the split jaw approach, avoids a tracheotomy, less pain, shorter hospital stay, return to normal speech and swallowing more quickly.

At the University of Pennsylvania’s, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Weinstein and Dr. O’Malley developed the world's first TORS in the fall of 2004.  They received approval from the FDA to perform TORS.

In December of 2009 the FDA approved the use of Da Vinci surgical system using RevoLix laser to perform TORS for selected malignant lesions of the throat and voice box as well as all benign tumors.  The surgeon controls the robotic arms.

Eight tromboneologists from Orange and LA counties will join McGuire along with a pianist, bassist and drummer to perform some of his favorite pieces of music by Bach, Lauritsen, Satie and several others.  Many kinds of music expressing McGuire’s passion especially for trombones will be performed.

“I hope you will attend and enjoy the performance as much as we will,” said McGuire.  ‘Even though the concert is free, donations will go to help support the Arts and Music Committees in Mission Viejo.  Don’t feel obligated to donate because it is after all free,” stressed McGuire.

McGuire has performed for Relay for Life.   Relay for Life of Mission Viejo reached a milestone in raising $2 million dollars.
