The American Cancer Society is partnering again with the City of Mission Viejo to host enrollment for the Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3) as well as recruit volunteers, (community Champions). Mission Viejo is the only location for the study in South Orange County. You don’t have to be a resident of Mission Viejo to participate.
The purpose of the CPS-3 is to better understand the factors that cause or prevent cancer. The study examines lifestyle, behavior, environment and genetic factors. The key is to use this information to eliminate cancer.
There are two informational meetings scheduled to recruit Community Champions/volunteers. Volunteers will receive information regarding the recruitment of participants for the study.
The first Informational meeting is on Wed., Oct 9, 2013 at 6 pm at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way, Mission Viejo, 92691. The second one is on Fri., Oct. 11 at noon in the Saddleback Room at City Hall, 200 Civic Center, Mission Viejo, 92691.
To participate in the study you need to have never been diagnosed with any cancers other than basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer. Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 are eligible and need to be willing to make a 20-30 year commitment. There is no cost to participate in the study.
The study involves the participant to sign a consent form, complete a survey, provide some physical measurements (waist size) and give a small sample of blood. At your enrollment appointment a certified, trained phlebotomist will get the sample. This appointment will take approximately 20-30 minutes. After that participants do all follow-up surveys and updates at home.
Even though it seems like a long term commitment once you are enrolled the time commitment is small. You can make a difference by supporting this research.
Enrollment to participate in the CPS3 study will take place on Dec. 3-5 at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center and City Hall.
