Show You Care. Support Mission Viejo in the Fight Against Cancer.

Many of you may already know about the American Cancer Society’s 20th Relay for Life of Mission Viejo.  If you don’t, Relay for Life of Mission Viejo is a 24-hour overnight event that was held at Saddleback College on June 7 and June 8, 2014  to raise money and awareness about cancer.  Since 1994 the city of Mission Viejo has participated in Relay and has raised more than $2 million in the fight against cancer.

We do more than just have meetings, plan the event and raise money.  Many of us are passionate in the fight against cancer and have joined the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, otherwise known as CAN.

ACS CAN is the nation’s leading cancer advocacy organization that is working every day to make cancer a priority.  The nonprofit, nonpartisan, advocacy affiliate of ACS supports policy and legislation designed to eliminate cancer.  It works at the local, state and federal levels to enact laws and policies to provide for affordable cancer prevention, early detection and treatment for all Americans.

ACS CAN supports funding for research that can develop advanced medical equipment and treatments, plus programs that prevent or detect cancer at its earliest, treatable stage needed to conquer cancer.

ACS CAN campaigns led by volunteers and staff have fought for a smoke-free environment, helped secure U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulation of tobacco products and increased federal funding for National Institutes of Health research.

Every four years ACS CAN hosts a massive lobbying event in Washington, D.C. called “Celebration on the Hill”.  As you can see we don’t just run, walk or skip around the track for 24 hours to celebrate those who have survived cancer and remember those we have lost.   We fight back and empower everyone to join the fight against cancer.

We realize not everyone could attend the event at Saddleback College, but you can help us fight back by becoming an ACS CAN member.   ACS CAN gives ordinary people extraordinary power and lets their voices be heard.

“Our goal this year in Mission Viejo is to have 50, ACS CAN members.  That would be a record for any city event in California,” noted Denise Matson, Fight Back Chairman/Mission Viejo.  "We are realistic, but we know there are survivors, caregivers, families and friends in our community whose lives have been tragically impacted by cancer.  They can make a difference.”

ACS CAN is proud to announce our new online Tributes Program.  It’s easy!
