MISSION VIEJO MAN CHOSE "I'm Possible" over "impossible"

Mission Viejo High School lost one of its biggest fans last week. Michael Munguia passed away on Saturday May 10th at the age of 48 due to complications from diabetes.

“Mike”, a former Marine, was a resident of Mission Viejo , was born on October 7, 1965 in Houston Texas. Michael lived with, and was cared for by his cousin Venisa Munguia. He is survived by her, his six siblings, and many aunts , uncles and cousins.

Mike often attended athletic events at Mission Viejo High School, and having played high school football himself, was seen at every home Football game to cheer on the Diablos. He became closely acquainted with many students and athletes through his local church and community involvement. He served as a Webelos Den Leader for a local Cub Scout unit, helping young men prepare for advancement into Boy Scouts. Mike enjoyed doing handy work, especially for the benefit of others, but friends and neighbors were known to reciprocate by helping him when needed. Volunteers would show up at his home every year to hang his Christmas lights.

Mike was often seen by locals on his motorized scooter around Mission Viejo, because although he was a double amputee, he did not let his disability keep him from being active and enjoying life. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and regularly attended church meetings, and even participated in the Mormon Helping Hands Community Improvement Program.

“Mike looked like a tough guy, but then he would smile, and you would see who he really was. Despite all of the hardships he had been though in his life, he was happy, and an inspiration to those who knew him,” said close friend and fellow church member Rod Richardson, “He will be greatly missed by many.”
