Coroner Identifies Man Shot in Fire Station Parking Lot

A man who died of a gunshot wound Monday in Mission Viejo has been identified.

Authorities have identified the man found shot dead in a Mission Viejo fire station parking lot Monday evening.

Mission Viejo resident John Melvin Chipman, 83, died of an "apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," Orange County Sheriff's Department Supervisor Jeff Williams confirmed Tuesday.

Chipman was found around 6:30 p.m. Monday at Fire Station 24, 25862 Marguerite Pkwy.
