DUI Checkpoints at Secret Mission Viejo Location Friday

Police will be searching for drunk and drug-impaired drivers Friday night in Mission Viejo.

If you plan to party Friday night, stay out of the driver's seat. That's the message the Orange County Sheriff's Department is spreading with the announcement of a DUI check point from 6 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday.

The location is kept secret, but officials usually choose a long thoroughfare that won't hold up too much traffic when cars are stopped.

Here are some more criteria for determining where to search for drunk and drugged drivers, per the OCSD: "DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public."

Federal grants pay for the regular checkpoints, which help reduce drunk driving fatalities by 20 percent when they're well-publicized, according to an OCSD statement.

You'll also want to make sure your driver's license and vehicle registration are current—deputies will check those at the checkpoint as well.
