A 27-year-old Mission Viejo man was behind bars today on federal charges of making and possessing explosive devices, according to the FBI.
Arraignment is scheduled Oct. 21 at the federal courthouse in Santa Ana for Zachary Turtenwald, who was arrested in San Francisco on Sunday, said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.
He made his initial appearance Monday in Santa Ana on a charge of manufacturing explosive materials without a license and possession of unregistered destructive devices, according to Eimiller.
FBI agents on Friday executed a search warrant at Turtenwald's apartment at 24950 Via Florecer in Mission Viejo, where they found various chemicals and other ingredients typically used to build a bomb, according to the criminal complaint.
Turtenwald was traveling when he was informed of the search warrant, so he surrendered to San Francisco police and was brought back to Orange County on Sunday, Eimiller said.
