Felony Hit-and-Run Trial Begins for Killer Syed's Mom

The mother of spree killer Ali Syed is scheduled to begin her felony hit-and-run trial Tuesday morning in Santa Ana.

Sarwat Yasmine Syed of Ladera Ranch is charged with hitting a family of four on the I-5 freeway near Laguna Canyon Road, seriously injuring a 4-year-old girl. Syed has pled not guilty to two felony charges.

Syed was arrested the day after the June 20, 2011 accident when she filed an insurance claim.

On Feb. 19, Sarwat's son Ali murdered three people with a shotgun and injured three more before turning the gun on himself.

Although initial reports questioned whether Ali's murder spree was connected to his mother's legal troubles, a suicide note found on his computer later convinced sheriff's investigators that the victims of the teen's violence were chosen at random.
