How Not to Blow $10,000 This Weekend

They'll be waiting for you in Lake Forest Friday.

If you don't want to blow $10,000 this weekend, the Orange County Sheriff's Department has a tip.

They'll be actively stopping vehicles Friday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed Lake Forest location and checking for drunk and high drivers.

Getting caught could cost you a lot:

  • jail time
  • a suspended license
  • insurance increases
  • fines
  • fees
  • DUI classes

All that combined can add up to more than $10,000, said Sheriff-Coroner spokesperson Gail Krause.

In 2011, 774 Californians died in accidents in which at least one driver was driving drunk, Krause said. That's about one-third of all traffic deaths, said Christopher J. Murphy, director of the Office of Traffic Safety.

The number of DUI deaths has been declining since 2006, Murphy said, and he thinks DUI checkpoints are responsible.
