Man Arrested in Campfire Blaze Near La Paz, Olympiad

The following is a selection of calls from Mission Viejo to the Orange County Sheriff's Department from May 27-31.

A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson Sunday night after police say he started a blaze that burned about an acre of vegetation and took firefighters more than two hours to douse near the intersection of La Paz and Olympiad Road.

Police think Dwight Leonard started a campfire that became uncontrollable. When he was arrested, he had Bud Light beer and soup cans, similar to ones found near the fire, say police.

Leonard is being held in custody at Central Men’s Jail on $10,000 bail.

“Use good judgment in the wild lands and don’t start fires,” Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Greg McKeown said. “We’re fortunate with this one. Because of the time and weather we were able to keep the fire small.”
