Mission Viejo Deputy Seriously Injured in Lakeside Crash

A 13-year veteran Mission Viejo sheriff's deputy is in serious but stable condition after being ejected from his car and crashing into a light pole around 3 a.m. Monday.

The deputy crashed while traveling south on Marguerite near Vista Del Lago. He was hospitalized in critical condition, but his health is now described as "serious but stable," Orange County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Gail Krause said.

"He's responsive, recognizing individuals who have come to visit him,'' Krause told City News Service around noon Monday.

Investigators are recreating the accident in an effort to investigate exactly what happened, Krause said. It is unknown whether the deputy was wearing a seatbelt, she told CNS.

Marguerite was shut down between Vista del Lago and Alarcon during the investigation. Krause said that street was either already clear or would be soon as of Monday at 9:15 a.m.

Officials have not released the deputy's name. A call to Krause to ask for his name around 3 p.m. Monday was not immediately returned.
