UPDATE: Oso Crash Victim

A 23-year-old man dies in an Oso Parkway car crash early Monday morning, police say.

Correction: The Orange County coroner has identified the victim's residence as Costa Mesa. A previous report indicated a different residence per the California Highway Patrol.

A 23-year-old Costa Mesa man died after a 5 a.m. car crash near the end of Oso Parkway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Goodwin.

The man, who has not been identified pending notification of family, was driving a 1998 Honda east on Oso when he veered right onto the sidewalk, hit a pedestrian signal pole and struck a chain link fence, Goodwin said.

The driver was alone and no other vehicles were involved, Goodwin said.

Police aren't sure why the driver crashed.

"We're trying to figure that out," Goodwin said.

The incident took place in front of Wagon Wheel Elementary on a downhill grade in which the speed limit is 55 mph. There did not appear to be any hard braking tire marks on the scene Monday afternoon.

The car hit the chain-link fence, a small area about 20 feet long that envelopes a gate to a Riley Wilderness Park trail.

The car rotated more than 90 degrees after hitting the fence so that it almost faced oncoming traffic.

The highway patrol would like any witnesses to the crash to contact it at (949) 487-4000.
