Power Outage in Mission Viejo Affects 5K-Plus

For some customers, the lights were out for 14 hours.

A power outage which started with the failure of some underground equipment turned out the lights in some Mission Viejo homes and businesses for as many as 14 hours Tuesday and today, San Diego Gas & Electric reported.

Company spokeswoman Erin Coller said the outage began at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday for 5,586 customers.

Some equipment buried underground failed, and that in turn most likely caused some above-ground equipment to fail, Coller said. Restoration was delayed because workers had to pump out water at the location of the underground equipment.

Some Mission Viejo properties -- 1,200 SDG&E customers -- had power restored within 20 minutes, she said. Another 633 customers got their electricity back by 2:10 p.m.

But a full 3,753 customers were in the dark, literally, until 2:58 this morning, Coller said.

"Updates always available on the live outage list," Coller said.

And while they don't advertise the outages on their Twitter page, SDG&E officials will respond to tweets.

Tweeted on frustrated customer Tuesday: " @SDGE let's get on it boy and girls!!! We need our power! #whatdowepayyoufor"

Said another: "6:00 pm. Still no power. Supposed to have been on by 4pm. California and it's third world power grid is getting old"
