Serious Injuries for Mission Viejo Man After Motorcycle Wreck

A 44-year-old Mission Viejo man was seriously injured on I-5 south after police say he veered across several lanes of traffic.

A Mission Viejo man has suffered a fractured neck after a Monday crash on southbound I-5, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

The 44-year-old driver, whose name has not been released, veered his 1997 Honda 650-L right across several lanes of traffic before crash landing at the truck scales on-ramp, the officer said.

"(Police) don't know why, but he suddenly made a hard press to the right and locked his brakes up, and he got ejected," Bettencourt said.

The man was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. He was the only one involved in the accident, Bettencourt said.

An investigating officer will interview witnesses and assess the scene of the accident before deciding what caused the accident in a report. It usually takes eight to ten days to finish such a report, Bettencourt said.

Initial reports suggested the man may have been paralyzed by the accident, but whether the neck fracture led to paralysis remains unclear, Bettencourt said.

The accident and the airlift did not close down traffic, the officer said.
