Speed, Slick Roads Led to Deputy's Crash

Wet roads, fog and speed contributed to a single-vehicle crash that injured a Mission Viejo sheriff's deputy early Monday morning, said sheriff's spokeswoman Gail Krause.

The deputy is in stable condition, an improvement over Monday, Krause said. His identity has not been released pending investigation of the accident, she said.

Standing water sat on Marguerite near Vista del Lago where the deputy crashed, Krause said.

The deputy was ejected from his patrol car, leading some to speculate on the cause of his injuries, like Patch reader Larry Swingholm:

"I wonder if he was wearing his seat belt. Hard to believe he was ejected if he was."

Krause would not say whether the deputy was wearing a seatbelt.

"The investigation is still ongoing," she said.
