Video: Train Strikes, Kills Mission Viejo Man in Apparent Suicide

Pacific Surfliner was moving south from the Irvine stop with about 85 passengers on board.

An Amtrak train struck and killed a man in Mission Viejo late Thursday night in what was said by officials to be an apparent suicide.

The death was reported at 11:32 p.m. Thursday on the railway between La Paz Road and Alicia Parkway, Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Colin Murphy said.

The man's name was withheld pending notification of kin, Murphy said.

Pacific Surfliner train 796 was moving south from the Irvine stop with about 85 passengers and several crew members on board, Christina Leeds of Amtrak told City News Service. No crew or passengers were injured.

Passengers and crew remained on the train during the investigation, Leeds said.
