Camp Out with the Mayor at Oso Creek Trail

Later this month, Mayor Dave Leckness and the YMCA host the city's first overnight camp out.

For the first time ever, the mayor of Mission Viejo will host a citywide camp out Oct. 22-23.

This free event will take place at the Oso Creek Trailhead next to .

Dinner and breakfast will be provided by the city. There will be music, skits, singalongs and other family-friendly activities.

The local is helping host the event, and many local Boy Scouts plan to attend.

Some other Orange County cities, like Lake Forest and Laguna Hills, hold camp outs each year. But this is the first time Mission Viejo has attempted one.

Here's what to bring: tents (stakes are OK), sleeping bags, bottled water and flash lights. No pets allowed.

Mayor Dave Leckness thought of the camp out a few weeks ago while on a golf cart tour of the Oso Creek Trail. He said he liked the thought of having a camp out right in the middle of town.

"That's the beauty of it," he said at the last city council meeting.
